COURT BUSINESS IN 1967
Fees, fines, and payments into court received by the Magistrate’s Court office in Christchurch last year amounted to almost a million dollars—s9Bo,2so. This figure reflects the incl eased volume of court business in 1967. Cases before the court numbered 30,061 (including 20,661 traffic cases) ; compared with 23,796 cases in 1966 (17,588 traffic cases). i Children’s Court cases total- i led 1799, compared with 1375 i the previous year. Fines received amounted to : $282,552 ($244,322 in 1966), I while • civil fees comprised $52,824. < Payments into court in sat- I isfaction of debt and payments i on maintenance orders amounted to $644,874. 1
There were 882 criminal sittings during the year, with Stipendiary Magistrates sitting for 2872 hours on these cases. Justices of the Peace sat for 117 hearings, occupying 252 hr 45min. During the year, 11,804 civil actions were begun. There were 3398 judgment summonses issued, and 2448 warrants issued in connection with these. Civil bearings took up 401 hr 29min of the Magistrates’ time. Of miscellaneous matters, orders requiring supervision by the Maintenance Officer numbered 1790. There were 389 adoptions filed.
