Drowned In Heavy Seas
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. A man was drowned in heavy seas off Waikanae Beach yesterday despite all efforts to save him. He was: Ashley Brown, of Wellington. Mr Brown was seen struggling in the water well out to sea about 6 p.m. Wayne Oliver, aged 18, paddled out on his surf board to help and, while he was making his way back to the shore with Mr Brown, the chief fire officer of the Waikanae Volunteer Fire Brigade (Mr E. F. Gates) also entered the water to help. Mr Brown was brought ashore unconscious. Resuscitation was attempted, but he died on the way to hospital.
