Two Alarms, No Sharks
(N.Z. Press Association) DUNEDIN, January 12. Swimmers at St Clair Beach were twice cleared from the water this afternoon when the shark alarm was rung. Both were false alarms. Just after noon about 100 swimmers left the sea when the bell rang, although according to the patrolman, Mr A. Moore, it took some time to get everyone out of the water. The man who gave the warning later reported that the sharks were in fact birds and the all-clear was given about 12.25 p.m. About 1 p.m. the -alarm bell was rung again and about 70 swimmers hurried from the water. When surf club members took a boat out they found that the shark was just a clump of seaweed.
