Tourist Industry

Sir, —In bur Prime Minister's Christmas message he asked us all to work together to make 1968 a prosperous year. We realise how tourism can help this beautiful country of ours, but it disgusts and does not encourage one when, in the first 1968 edition of “The Press” we read how an American visitor cannot get his own car past the red tape of New Zealand Customs for five or six days. What incentive do those in high office give New Zealanders to make 1968 prosperous and encourage visitors? The writer recently had a tour of many countries with the All Blacks and in every country the greatest help was given by all officials. “Red tape” was practically non-existent. We are entitled to an explanation why a visitor to our land should be subjected to this kind of treatment, and we should be ashamed that it is tolerated. The Government cannot blame visitors from other countries for by-passing New Zealand when this is the way they are treated.—Yours, DISGUSTED. January 2, 1968.
