PUZZLED RESCUER

Water Only | Waist Deep <N Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 3. Flagged down by Mr A. F Sherman near Cox's Creek tonight, a taxi driver jumped into the water, swam 30 yards to a man in distress clinging to a boat and found that he was only in waist-deep water. The taxi driver, who declined to give his name, bundled the man, a 60-year-old pensioner who was fully dressed, into the boat and pushed it ashore. The driver said the man appeared to have been drinking. The boat was a dinghy owned by the man, who was thought to have been fishing. As he dried himself the taxi driver said: “I felt silly when I found how deep it was, but the bloke was pretty upset.” Police arranged for the pensioner to get home.
