Canton Trade Fair
Sir, —The words of Pandit Nehru (quoted by Kathleen Wright) were uttered before Red China committed aggression against Tibet and India. The fine words of this ardent pacifist only encouraged Chinese colonialism.—Yours, etc., L. J. JONES. December 28, 1967.
Sir, —If, as “P.J.A.” asserts, Chinese morale regarding the efforts of this autumn’s fair can be deflated by a visitor from the “Financial Times,” it must have been rendered very sensitive to things in general by the Peking radio broadcast earlier this month to the 50 million people of Szechwan province, 500 miles north-west of Canton. A radio appeal was made for a ceasefire, a radio request to railway workers to stop sabotaging their railways, and a radio decree that “illegal" trials were illegal. Millions in other provinces can listen-in on radios which must be among the 350,000 articles Kathleen Wright tells of at the fair. This broadcast was heard, repeated to and by “The Times.” No news is said to be good news, and “P.J.A.,” insisting on no news but good news about China, may yet advocate no news at all. Regarding Nehru, he knew India needed morale, but he would not buy it in China.—Yours, etc.,
A. B. CEDARIAN. December 28, 1967.
