Benmore Reefton Pick

Benmore, a fine second to the speedy First Pick in the A. J. Harris Memorial Handicap at Hororata on Saturday, should make amends with a win in the A. B. Archer Memorial Handicap at Reefton today. Benmore is comparatively inexperienced, but he has much more than average ability.

There was merit in Benmore’s placing at Hororata as he was in the middle of the field early and had to cover extra ground to work into a handy position on the home turn.

He showed gameness in a battling finish, and it was only in the last 20 yards that First Pick really took his measure. The extra three furlongs in this event should not stop Benmore winning. Squire’s Hanover was a decisive winner over Saladin and Andy Black at Hororata on Saturday, recording the useful time of 3min 35 2-ssec for 13 furlongs. Squire’s Hanover is racing most consistently and another bold showing is expected from him. Ocean Brigade will be having his first start since June and his first since joining D. J. Townley’s Tinwald team. The veteran Light Brigade gelding has been impressive lately at trials, and he will have to show very little improvement to be a threat to his more seasoned rivals. Authentic could master two miles if he receives a favourable trail to the straight. He is not noted for consistency, but at times his efforts have been most promising. Falincia, the winner of two races at the Westport meeting, Dryden Pal, Winning Song, and Sir Edd appeal most of the others. Misty Morn, Silver Strip, and Santa Claus form a likely trio for the second leg of the main double, the F. W. Archer Memorial Handicap, a race in which the chances of Vice Royal, Talisman, Mister Pike and Inspire are also highly rated. An on-course concession double will be run on the President’s Handicap and the Black’s Point Handicap, Belmartial and Andy Black forming a likely combination. Unless there is heavy rain, the track will be fast.
