Wellington Out For 184; Andrews 5/69

(New Zealand Press Association) WANGANUI. A Wanganui schoolmaster, B. Andrews, wrecked Wellington’s batting with his seam bowling for Central Districts at Wanganui yesterday.

In 30 overs, in two spells, Andrews took five vital wickets as Central Districts bundled Wellington out for a moderate 184 before tea on the first day of their Plunket Shield match.

Wellington was 104 for four wickets at lunch, but then crumbled dismally. Andrews, getting considerable movement off the wicket, exploited the Wellington batsmen’s weakness to the ball moving in to the body to finish with the figures of 69 for five. Rain ruined Central Districts’ chances of driving home the advantage. As the final Wellington wicket fell at 3 p.m.—after an innings lasting 260 minutes—rain began and eased only for Central Districts to score 14 runs without loss in 15 minutes before play was stopped. Accurate Attack After winning the toss Wellington opened quietly against the accurate medium-paced attack of J. H. Howell and Andrews. In his eighth over Andrews tempted the New Zealand opener, B. A. G. Murray, into a forward prod to a short, swinging ball which was caught by M. J. F. Shrimpton. P. T. Barton, a former international, hammered Andrews

to the boundary off the first ball he faced, but was trapped lbw three balls later.

R. E. Redmond, with elegant driving, and J. F. M. Morrison edged Wellington past 50 in 71 minutes and began to assume control. Redmond was dropped by M. P. Baker with the score at 63, and it looked as though Central Districts could suffer for the miss. Redmond’s innings ended 10 runs later when a drive off B. W. Yuile was caught by M. L. Ryan. Careful Start The captain, D. O. Neely, came in and it was strange to see this aggressive batsman prodding and pushing for fully 25 minutes, mostly against Yuile, before scoring.

But Neely opened with punishing strokes in the halfhour before lunch to race to 23 and, with Morrison batting soundly, helped Wellington to 104. In the last over the Central Districts captain, V. Pollard, had Neely caught by Ryan. Morrison scored two boundaries off Andrews and a third off Pollard to reach 41 just after lunch, but he was out lbw for 42 in Andrews’s best bowling spell in first-class cricket. Andrews had Wellington six down for 130 in his next over when H. A. Morgan was caught by Pollard at wide mid-on. W. R. Haskell, who took six wickets for six runs against Otago, became Andrews’s fifth victim with the visitors’ score at 132. Late Effort L. C. Butler and R. O. Collinge each scored 22 runs to take Wellington’s score to 184. The spinners, Pollard (3/51 off 22 overs) and Yuile (2/28 off 16 overs) also bowled soundly. Scores: WELLINGTON First Innings B. A. G.
