Man Of 82 Crawls To Get Help
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 27. An 82-year-old man with a broken ankle crawled through the bush to get help after his car plunged down a 500 ft bank at Pakiri, north of Auckland, last night.
He is Trevor “Colonel Tim” Carpendale, of Pakiri, who was alone jn his small car when it left the road on the Pakiri hill about 6 p.m. He said today that his shoe must have slipped on the accelerator. He could feel himself being hurtled down the hill and then the car came to a stop
for a second on a ledge. He was thrown out and could see the car rolling another 200 ft to the bottom of the gully.
He realised his ankle was broken so he crawled toward the road to try to attract attention.
Several cars, including one containing his daughter, Mrs R. Thomas, on whose farm he lives at Pakiri, passed before a young couple heard his cries for help.
A Warkworth ambulance took him to North Shore Hospital, where his condition today is satisfactory. He has a broken right ankle, sore ribs, and cuts.
When 20 Mr Carpendale joined the Sth Bengal Lancers, and served in France, Mesopotamia, Persia, Aden, and India. He retired in 1932 as a lieutenant-colonel but spent another six years commanding an Indian maharajah’s private army.
