YUILE HELPS CENTRAL DISTRICTS’ GOOD LEAD

(New Zealand Press Association) HAMILTON. An eighth-wicket partnership of 78 runs between B. W. Yuile and R. M. Schofield enabled Central Districts to reach 259 in its first innings and lead Northern Districts by 161 in the Plunket Shield cricket match at Hamilton.

Yuile wrecked the Northern Districts first innings, taking seven wickets for 28, in the first day of play.

At close of play yesterday, the second day, Northern had scored 48 without loss in its second innings.

Coming together when Central had lost seven wickets for 150 in reply to Northern’s disappointing 98. Yuile and Schofield knuckled down to the task of repairing an innings which had started sagging through the depredations of a lionhearted, medium-paced trier, J. Smith. Yuile batted with characteristic application and the type of diligence which had brought him seven Northern wickets with his left-arm spin on Saturday. His 55 enabled him to beat V. Pollard by one run for the distinction of top scorer of the innings Pollard s 54 on Saturday bristled with aggression. Schofield also hit the ball purposefully for 49.

Central Districts used seven bowlers before close of play yesterday in an unsuccessful attempt to dislodge Northern's openers. M. J. Horton and G. A Rose, in 80 minutes batting before stumps. The batsmen scored only 48 runs from 32 overs in that time but they were still there at the finish

Horton batted competently for 31, but an out-of-touch Rose battled hard to play himself into form. He had been at the wicket 45 minutes before he started scoring with a single and he did not add

to his tally for another 25 minutes.

Although the pitch was good and the outfield faster than on Saturday, runs were difficult against accurate bowling and brilliant fielding. Central Districts emerged with the honours on Saturday. No excuses could be offered for the rout of the Northern batsmen, among whom Horton and G. V. Giles were the best. Horton batted solidly for two hours and a half for 30. and Giles showed characteristic aggression for 26. Early Losses There were no easy runs against the Northern Districts bowlers and both opening batsmen for Central, M. L. Ryan and P. J. C. Courts, were out before the score reached 40. However, Pollard’s aggression paid dividends and a

brisk 54 included a six over long on, and three fours. NORTHERN DISTRICTS First Innings M. J. Horton, lbw, b Yuile 30 G. A. Rose, c Schofield, b Howel 0 J. W. Guy, c Schofield, b Howell 0 H. T.
