Chess Venture By N.Z. Boys

’J'WO 17-year-old North Island schoolboys will break new ground when, early next month, they become the first New Zealanders to compete in the Australian junior chess championships. The two boys, E. Green from Waihi Beach and a pupil of Hamilton Boys’ High School, and R. Waayman of Kawerau, are competing by invitation in the 1968 championship. They leave next week for Adelaide.

There are a record 42 entries and the New Zealand boys, although entitled to retain any prizes they win. will not be eligible for the championship.

Green pla.ved in his first tournament when he was 12 and has now competed in four New Zealand championships, all in the reserve grade. His best placing was fifth in 1965-66. This year he won the Auckland regional and New Zealand schoolboys’ championships, both without losing a match.

Waayman has been playing chess for eight and a half years and competing in tournaments for three years. He was second to Green in the New Zealand boys’ championship this year, but his most significant success was in this year’s Auckland Easter open tournament. He was third equal, behind New Zealand's greatest player, O. Sarapu. and the Filipine, R. Tan Cardoso.
