It Is Quiet Now
When there is no wind it is deadly quiet now at Erewhon station, in the headwaters of the Rangitata, according to Mr A. A. Urquhart.
The reason is that bird life has been practically eliminated by last month’s unprecedented snowstorm on the station. Mr Urquhart believes that the birds may have
died of a broken heart. This belief is supported by the fact that birds that were fed crumbs during the storm still seemed to die. He believes that a similar state of affairs may have been responsible for the death of sheep, because of the sudden and unexpected change of conditions at this time of the year.
