RACING Red Sash Favoured In Sprint At Wingatui

Red Sash and the Ricearton horseman, A. J. Stokes, a combination which was unbeaten in open sprints at Invercargill last inonth, are generally expected to round off a notable “hat trick” at Wingitui today.

Red Sash will be a firm favourite for the Flying Handicap, the main race for sprinters on the first day of the Dunedin Jockey Club’s cup meeting.

If Red Sash has held the form which gave her a first-up win for the season over six furlongs and enabled her to run seven furlongs in nearrecord time at Invercargill, it will take something exceptional from any of the others to beat her today. Red Sash, which is trained at Winton by her owner, N. L. White, is one of the form runners Southland trainers will saddle. Loch Nagar, Willypay, and Silver Spire are others with last-start form from the same province. But Red Sash’s strongest rival could be the Riccartontrained Red Chips. The runner-up to Empire King in the Members’ Handicap at the New Zealand Cup meeting last month, could test the favourite if he produced his best run.

Castle Flight will also have solid backing. This capable but unpredictable Wingatui sprinter was a winner at Beaumont the last time he raced. Stokes will have two, and possibly three, good rides be-

side Red Sash today. He will be on Shipmaster, the likely favourite for the Mornington Improvers’ Handicap. Seminole which, with Next Please and Millie Small, will give Riccarton stables strong representation in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double, will be another of his mounts.

Stokes’ doubtful mount yesterday was Pharasal, “The Press” pick for the James Hazlett Gold Cup, second leg of the main double.

Pharasal was slightly sore after an outstanding final gallop in training on Thursday. But he seemed to be making good progress again yesterday and was taken south with Shipmaster. A decision on whether he will run today will be made by J. C. Tomkinson after Stokes rides him in work at Wingatui this morning.

If Pharasal drops out of the second leg field, the popular fancy could be Palisade. There will be strong backing also for Court Belle and Empire King.

There will be an on-course concession double on the Warrington High-weight and the Mornington Improvers’ Handicap. The Medico and

Shipmaster could be the successful combination. After a spell of fine weather the track is firm.
