Wine In Boxes
“Strong cubic-shaped containers are becoming steadily more popular as wineholders in Britain,” reported Denis Desoutter in his Industrial Newsletter in the 8.8. C. World Service programme, Science and Industry. “The box looks like a waxed cardboard carton from the outside, but inside there is a plastic bladder. There is a tap at the bottom of the box, and the whole thing is really just a modern version of an ancient idea —the wineskin.
“Apart from the fact that these containers can be packed flat before they’re filled, there’s the great merit that as you draw off the wine the inner plastic bag collapses. No air needs to go in to replace the liquid drawn off, so no bacteria go in either, and the wine keeps longer. But come to think of it, who wants to keep wine?”
