Oxford D.H.S. Prize-giving
Many parents failed to appreciate that School Certificate represented a minimum standard of education acceptable to trade employers and a minimum preparation for adequacy in living, the headmaster of Oxford District High School iMr R. J. Harrison) said at the school’s secondary department prize-giving. “It has been traditional for many Oxford parents to consider that they have done well by their children if they grant them three years of secondary education. Indeed too many con sider that two years or even less is sufficient/’ he said.
A fifth form which was only half the size of the original third form, as it was at Oxford this year, represented an ex cessive disregard of education quite out of keeping with contemporary needs, Mr Harrison said.
The guest speaker at the prize-giving was the retiring principal of Riccarton High School, Mr A. J. Gainsford, who is both a former pupil and a former teacher of Oxford District High School. Mrs Gainsford presented the prizes. Prizes were:

Sports Awards. —Senior champion (boys): Charles Ivory. Senior champion (girls): Jennifer James. Junior champion (boys): Robin Ivory. Junior champion (girls): Katrina Thomson.
