CALCUTTA CLASH
Police Fire On Crowd (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) CALCUTTA, Dec. 22. Police opened fire on a crowd trying to set fire to buses in Central Calutta last night, injuring several youths. It was yet another in a series of violent clashes that have marked the civil disobedience campaign in the State of West Bengal. Eleven rounds were fired, police said, when the crowd attacked a bus passenger terminal and tried to set fire to buses parked outside.
The mob retaliated with firecrackers and bottles before being driven off by police tear gas squads. It was the fourth day of a State-wide mass civil disobedience campaign called by the former leftist United Front State Government against its dismissal by the Governor last month. Earlier yesterday police used tear gas against thousands of youths demonstrating in the centre of the city, «nd 300 were arrested.
