PAUSE IN TRADE PACT SUGGESTED
(New. Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 22. It appeared that the Government was pushing New Zealand as far into free trade with Australia as fast as it could, said the president of the Manufacturers’ Federation (Mr R. G. Speirs) today.
He was commenting on the list of items to be added to schedule A of the agreement from January 1, 1968, and the list of items nominated for inclusion from January 1, 1969.
In discussions held this year it was agreed by all parties in the trade negotiations that agreement could only work satisfactorily if the imbalance of trade in favour of Australia was reduced, and if further development of New
Zealand industry was promoted, he said. The results achieved remained small and there was a growing feeling among New Zealand manufacturers that there should be a pause with no further extensions to the list of items covered by the agreement until adequate proof of performance was given.
This was required to demonstrate that the agreement was working in the interests of New Zealand, said Mr Speirs.
