Holiday Deliveries Subscribers to “The Press” who intend to be away from their homes during the Christmas and New Year period are asked to notify “The Press” office immediately by telephoning 69-799 for any alteration they require in the delivery of their newspapers. Fire Danger The fire risk in the Balmoral and Waipara State forests is very high, and in other North Canterbury forests the fire danger is high. The senior forester in Canterbury of the New Zealand Forest Service (Mr H. H. Wilson) said yesterday that fire risk was quite normal at this time of year, and was mainly caused by the frequent north-westers. Southerly conditions would probably reduce the danger, he said. Safe Town The safest town in Britain is not Cuberland or Cumberland, two versions of its name printed yesterday. A former resident of the district telephoned “The Press” yesterday, and, with an accent which made it unnecessary for him to say that he came from north of the Tweed, said that the town’s name was in fact Cumbernauld. Hot Day A strong north-westerly wind, gusting to 43 miles an hour, brought cloud and high temperatures to Christchurch yesterday. The maximum temperature recorded at Harewood was 77 degrees at noon. At 6 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 56 degrees, at 9 a.m. it was 66 degrees, and at 3 p.m. it was 72 degrees. Shortly after 3 p.m. at Harewood a wind speed of 43 miles an hour was recorded. The temperature at the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. was 73 degrees. Aircrew Graduation Twelve members of No. 46 aircrew course—nine pilots and three navigators—will graduate at a ceremony at the Royal New Zealand Air Force base at Wigram tomorrow. Among them will be Flight Lieutenant H. J. B. Guy, a doctor, who is to join the Aviation Medical Unit at Auckland. The course will be the first to graduate since flying training was reduced from 18 to 12 months. The reviewing officer will be Air Commodore S. G. Quill, the Air Member for Supply. He is a former commander of the Wigram base.
