LIBRARY OPENED

Linwood Ave School

A house which began its life in the middle of farmlands was yesterday opened as the Linwood Avenue School library. The house, in the school grounds, became the headmaster’s residence when the school was opened in 1928 and has been occupied by headmasters until recently. The library has been stocked mostly through the efforts of pupils of the school and the school committee. Several .fund-raising ventures have been undertaken this year to finance the project, and through these efforts more than 2000 books have been obtained for the library.

There are three sections to the library—infant reading, fiction, and reference sections. Mr B. J. Wilson, the district senior inspector of schools, said at the opening ceremony yesterday that he hoped all pupils of the school would develop good reading habits and would, with the guidance of their teachers, make the fullest possible use of the library’s facilities. “There will come a time, I hope, when every primary school has its own library, but this situation seems to be far in the future,” he said. Mr R. K. Milne, a member of the Canterbury Education Board, officially opened the library. Other speakers at the ceremony included the chairman of the school committee (Mr G. G. Henderson) and the headmaster (Mr C. L. Martin).
