Good Results With Studentships
Christchurch Teachers’ College candidates on studentships for their first, second, and third years passed 86 per cent of all the units they sat in recent examinations of the University of Canterbury. A total of 93.8 per cent passed units required in terms of their studentships.
The district senior inspector of secondary schools (Mr F. N. Wylde) said yesterday that these results were an interesting commentary on the value of studentships and the performance of the holders. “A very great deal of a student’s success depends on his sense of security,” said Mr Wylde. “Granted a studentship for his maintenance during full-time university study, a candidate is relieved of most financial worries.
“Having available an experienced teachers’ college lecturer to give advice and assistance at any time also helps immeasurably. Finally, the general oversight of work, undertaken by that lecturer, ensures sustained effort and guidance.” The initial assessment of this year’s examination results shows that 79.1 per cent of units were passed by those in their first year, and 84.6 per cent of these students passed well enough to go on to the second year of studentship; 86.5 per cent of units were passed by those in their second year, and 92.8 per cent of them passed well enough to go on to the third year; and 91 per cent of units were passed by those in their third
year, with 93.3 per cent (all but one student) able to go on to professional training in the secondary department of the teachers’ college or to an additional year at university to complete bachelor or honours degrees.
Eighty-six on studentships read for advanaced degrees. For B.Sc., two gained firstclass honours and 14 gained honours. For M.Sc., one completed the degree and six are completing theses. For M.A., six gained first-class honours, 24 gained second-class honours, nine gained passes, and 22 are completing theses. For the diploma in fine arts with honours, four were awarded honours. Between 90 and 100 others on studentships are expected to read for advanced degrees next year.
Of those on studentships, 198 have completed bachelors’ degrees or diplomas—ll2 of them this year—and 68 of the bachelors’ degrees included two subjects advanced to stage three.
