Help For Maoris
Te Wai Pounamu, where Maori girls received special help and encouragement to retain their place in a pakeha school, was an ideal arrangement, working satisfactorily towards giving Maoris equal opportunities in education, the president (Mrs L. C. L. Averill) said at the annual meeting of the Friends of Te Wai Pounamu. Mrs Averill and the immediate past president (Mr W. Peers) paid a tribute to the late Miss Kai Riwai for her interest and unfailing support of the college. Her death had left a gap that would be hard to fill, said Mr Peers.
