China And U.N.

Sir,—There’s irony indeed in the solicitude of the small band of quasi-rationalist China watchers for Chinese membership of the United Nations. Methinks they protest more loudly than the Chinese themselves, whose contemporary ethos is contempt for all institutions not embraced by the awakening giant herself. Varian J. Wilson indirectly subscribes to the theory that might is right and it seems we must acquiesce in the sad fact that not only social revolution but United Nations membership comes out of the barrel of a gun.
