POWER IMPRESSES IN THREE MILES

Canterbury 10 mile road champion, J. T. Power (South Canterbury), showed fine ability on the track at the inter-club athletics meeting at Rugby Park on Saturday. Power demolished a strong three miles field in 14min 3.6 sec, the most impressive feature of his running being a sustained

sprint for a 61sec last lap. With four runners, Power. J. D. Macdonald (Riccarton). and N. Reid and B. Craig (both Olympic) sharing the , pace the rest of the large field was soon trailing and several were lapped late in the race. Reid and Craig gradually lost contact as the tempo quickened in the last mile. Power and Macdonald sped into the final lap almost together, but Macdonald had no answer when Power made his break with about 350 yards to go. The province’s outstanding junior sprinter, R. Jones (Toe H) humbled two senior representatives. In winning the senior furlong in 22.95ec Jones relegated M. Poulsen (University) and A. Tucker (High School Old Boys) to the minor placings. Earlier In the meeting Jones recovered well to win the junior 100 yards in 10.7 sec. after slipping badly at the start. One of the younger competitors. A. Ellis (St Martins) cleared away in the final stages to win a 15-mile road race by 57sec in Ihr 22min. Eight seconds behind W. L. Hobbs (Olympic) at 10 miles, Ellis took the lead with two miles and a half to go. A feature of the event was the large number of competitors to finish. 10 of the 21 runners surviving the gruelling event, run over a five-lap block circuit.
