West Moves Further Ahead In Senior Cricket
The only team to win its match, West-University, went further into the lead in the senior cricket championship when it defeated Old Collegians by nine wickets.
The second team, Riccarton, took first innings points in a high scoring match with Lancaster Park but is now 14 points behind West-Univer-sity.
As on the first day, the cricket was played at halfpace. East Shirley turned its game against Old Boys into a dull, pointless affair by refusing to take any chances either to win or lose the game.
St Albans batted slowly against Sydenham in a game
in which maiden overs were far more common than boundaries. The match between West University and Old Collegians came alive in the last hour when West-University was seeking quick runs and victory was achieved with only five minutes to spare. Riccarton was one exception to the generally dull batting. Seeking runs positively it scored 325 against Lancaster Park. J. Mclntyre, who took six for 70, was the most successful bowler, and with K. Baker (Lancaster Park) the only bowler to take five wickets or more.
The Riccarton all-rounder, F. Madrussen, hit an aggressive 82 for Riccarton, and a newcomer, P. G. Wall, scored a neat 64. The other batsman to pass 50 was the RastShirley captain, P. G. Coman. Scores:— i High School Old Boys 280 beat East Shirley 123 and 214/5 on the first innings. West-University 197/7 declared and 69/1 beat
Old Collegians 162 and 103 by nine wiekets. Sydenham 241 and 72/4 beat St Albans 213 on the first innings. Ricearton 325 beat Lancaster Park 263 and 41/2 on the first innings. Championship points are:— West-University 35, Ricearton 21, Old Boys 18, Sydenham 17, St Albans 13, East-Shirley 6, Lancaster Park 4, Old Collegians 2.
