With one more test, Australia could only square the series by winning all the remaining races. The New Zealand eight scored a decisive win by five lengths Within the first 200 metres New Zealand had nosed ahead and was leading by two lengths at 1500 metres. They continued to draw away to win in a superb display of polished power rowing. The New Zealand four took almost half the course to gain more than a canvas lead from the Australians, but after the 1000-metre mark they drew ahead without increasing their rating, stretching their lead for four lengths.
