MISSION TO LEPERS

Cost Of Aid

Increased

The devaluation of the New Zealand dollar in relation to sterling would mean a further cost of $9OOO on remittances from New Zealand for the Mission to Lepers, the secretary for the mission in New Zealand (the Rev. M. Feist) said in Auckland recently.

“The devaluation of sterling and related currencies will mean that it will cost the Mission to Lepers a lot more to maintain its homes and hospitals as many of them are in non-sterling areas,” he said.

In South-East Asia, Southern Asia and Africa, which were the Mission’s main areas of work, the annual extra cost was likely to be more than $112,000 on a world budget of $1 million. Mr Feist said that in India missions had been enjoying an advantage since the rupee was devalued. The Mission to Lepers, however, had used this opportunity to increase the wages of many of its lower-paid Indian staff and to step up grants to'some of the co-operating mission hospitals.

These increases would have to be sustained, although they had become more expensive.
