GOVT AID LIKELY
Mackenzie Farmers
The Minister of Agriculture (Mr Taiboys) is considering assistance for runholders and farmers in the Mackenzie Country and the Rangitata and Ashburton high country who suffered heavy stock losses and damage in the storms two weeks ago. The member of Parliament for Ashburton (Mr R. L. G. Talbot) had discussions with Mr Taiboys and the Minister of Lands (Mr Maclntyre) in Wellington on Thursday, and gave them a report of a meeting of more than 100 runholders and farmers in Fairlie this week.
“I am satisfied that Mr Taiboys now has a full appreciation of the. situation and that all recommendations will receive a full and sympathetic hearing from the Government,” Mr Talbot said yesterday. An organisation which could swing into action during a similar situation in future was advocated by Mr Talbot. He said an organisation was needed to give runholders better communications in a storm, so that they could get assistance more quickly.
