ZONE FINAL 1-1

(N.Z.P A -Reuter—Copyright) JOHANNESBURG. South Africa and Spain were level at 1-1 after the opening singles yesterday In the inter-zone final of the Davis Cup. M. Santana, the 1966 Wimbledon champion, gave Spain the lead by beating R. Moore 6-3, 6-2, 64, but S. C. Drysdale levelled the score with a 6-4, 6-2, 64, victory over M. Orantes.

The winner of the tie will meet the defending champion, Australia, in the challenge round at Brisbane, starting on December 26. Santana won without a great

deal of trouble, although he was below his best form.

He showed his superiority early, and his forceful forehand drives were too good for Moore, who came into the South African side as a replacement for the injured R. A. Hewitt. Drysdale’s match with the left-hander Orantes produced moments of brilliance. The South African’s service was a powerful weapon in the final set, in which he won three games to love. In the doubles, F. McMillan and Drysdale (South Africa) will meet Santana and Ariila.
