WORST ON RECORD
Weather In November
The first three weeks last month had the worst spell of weather experienced in Canterbury in November since the Meteorological Office began keeping records 103 years ago, according to a summary prepared by the office. The first three weeks were cold, wet, and windy. The maximum temperature of only 47 degrees, recorded on November 17, made it the coldest November day recorded in Christchurch.
Unprecented snowfalls occurred in inland Canterbury, and in South Canterbury from the coast to the ranges. Nearly all the month’s rain fell in the first 19 days; and the total of 4.62 inches made it the fourth wettest November in 103 years.
More than 3.5 in fell with the southerly storm between November 15 and 18. It was also a particularly windy month, with gusts over 40 m.p.h. recorded on 10 days, and a peak gust of' 59 m.p.h. from the north-west on November 24. The last nine days of the month were more in keeping with the time of year, the maximum temperature of 82 degrees on November 27 being the highest since April 9, the summary said. The lowest temperature was 33 degrees, recordsd on November 20. The sun shone on 193 hours compared with the average of 213 hours.
