Attempted Rape

On two charges of attempted rape, Gordon Foster, aged 22, a bulldozer driver (Mr W. A. Wilson), was imprisoned for a total of 18 months when sentenced by Mr Justice Wilson in the Supreme Court yesterday. Foster had previously pleaded guilty, on indictment in the Supreme Court, to the attempted rape of a 14-year-old high school girl in Thompson Park, New Brighton, on August 3, and to the attempted rape, on August 12, of a 20-year-old girl whom he had taken for a drive on the Summit Road. Foster was sentenced to nine months imprisonment on each charge, the terms cumulative.

His Honour said that were •it not for medical circumstances, indicated in a report on Foster by the Sunnyside Hospital authorities, he would have sentenced Foster to a total of three years’ imprisonment

The Sunnyside Hospital report should be brought to the attention of the prison authorities, his Honour ordered.
