Linwood Recovers From 0-3
After trailing by three games to nil, Linwood recovered to beat Wallabies, 7-5, in the sixth round of the senior table tennis competition last evening. J. E. Kyle greatly contributed to Linwood’s success with three singles wins, although he was fully extended by R. G. Hart. J. I. Urquhart clinched Linwood’s victory when he beat B. T. Edwards in the final singles match. J. Armstrong again remained unbeaten, ensuring a convicing 9-3 victory for Riccarton over Avonside 11. A feature of their contest was the defeat of J. Lelliott by M. Flewellen. This was only Lelliott’s third defeat during the summer season. R. Mitchell (Avonside), the national junior champion, again produced lackadaisical form when his team was beaten, 9-3, by Boon Hay, while St John’s caused a surprise by beating Selwyn, 7-5. C. Liddell (St John’s) gave an excellent display to beat J. Flint and J. Haigh. Points: Linwood 12, Hoon Hay 11, Riccarton 9, Avonside I 5, Wallabies 4, Selwyn 3, Avonside II and St John’s 2.
