A GOOD EXCUSE

Mr J. B. Collett, the Mayor of Lyttelton, arrived late at the Christchurch Road Tunnel Authority’s meeting yesterday; but he had a good excuse. He had driven through the tunnel at eight miles an hour behind a truck and trailer which he thought were heavily over-laden. Action was being taken to prevent slow traffic, the chairman (Mr R. A. Witbrock) said. There could be a prosecution for driving at a speed so slow that it impeded other traf-

fic. “No doubt you were impeded,” he added. Mr Collett said there were 12 to 15 vehicles behind the truck. The tunnel was designed so that a fullyloaded truck could travel up the grade in top gear, Mr Witbrock said. Part of the trouble was that trucks were putting on trailers. “They are attempting to pull trailers which overload the capacity for which an engine has been designed,” Mr Collett said.
