County Merger Scheme

The amalgamation of the Kowai and Ashley counties from April 1 next is proposed in a provisional amalgamation scheme announced yesterday by the Local Government Commission. The new county, to be known as Ashley, will be divided into five ridings, from which 12 councillors will be elected at the next triennial local body elections in October, 1968. In the meantime the new council will comprise the seven members of each council.

For a period not exceeding 10 years, the combined county will be divided into the Ashley and Kowai divisions to allow of rating adjustments. Mr G. A. Hay, who now is clerk to both councils, will hold that post with the combined county, and all staff of both councils will be retained.

Objections may be lodged against the provisional scheme within one month, and a poll may be asked for by not fewer than 15 per cent of the electors in one of the. affected districts.
