STUDENT HOSTELS
Mr Kinsella To Report (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 28. The Minister of Education (Mr Kinsella) has been asked to report urgently to the Cabinet on the effect the present allocation of Government expenditure is having on the building of students’ hostels at universities. Mr Kinsella will report on the possibility of increasing the grant to the University Grants Committee for subsidies to help to get building projects started at an earlier date. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) announced this after receiving representations on halls of residence at Massey University from the Mayor of Palmerston North (Mr Rennie). Mr Holyoake said that several projects for hostels were ready to go to tender and local contributions had been raised and Government subsidies applied for. Under the present policy, Slim was available to the University Grants Committee for subsidies on hostels each year for two years, but the cost of projects ready for tendering would exceed this amount.
