KEEPING UP TRADITION

Maintenance Of Power

The district electrical engineer of the New Zealand Electricity Department (Mr R. S. S. Meredith) told members of a special course in high tension power line maintenance that a strong tradition of keeping power supplies going, no matter what happened, had grown up in New Zealand. He said, the system of line maintenance in New Zealand had started in Christchurch 50 years ago for the Lake Coleridge Addington line which at the time was one of the highest voltage lines 'in the world. In those days the lines had to be checked twice weekly and reports made by telephone every hour to ensure continuity of service. Mr Meredith said that today the lines had to be examined only once a year because better materials made them more reliable.
