A NEW DIESEL-ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE, one of 55 ordered from Japan by the New Zealand Railways Department, photographed at the Mihara machinery works of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. The locomotives have a new triple-bogle arrangement, the first of Its kind in this country, and are for use in the South Island. Classified “Dj,” they weigh 63 tons when ready for service, and are powered by a 1050 h.p. diesel engine. Delivery of the locomotives is expected to be completed by 1969, and the first three are due at Lyttelton before Christmas.
