CRUCIAL YEAR
Containers By 1970 (N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Nov. 28. The year 1970 will be the crucial one for container shipping with Britain, the United States and Japan, so New Zealand must be ready by then or pay the price, according to the Far East director of the Port of New York Authority (Mr C. Gibson). If New Zealand was not ready, he said in Auckland, the price of her inefficiency would be higher costs for imports and exports, the latter probably pricing her out of markets abroad. Port costs were such a great part of over-all transport costs that the efficiency of ports was vital.. “It is quite obvious that container ships are going to be here by 1970,” said Mr Gibson. “You, here in New Zealand, have got to mesh with these other trading partners’ methods of transport”
