RACING NORMA’S LASS IS HOKITIKA PICK
Norma’s Lass has proved almost unbeatable on her campaigns at West Coast meetings, and she will be a strong favourite for the V. P. Bernard Handicap, second leg of the Westland Racing Club’s T.A.B. double today.
Norma’s Lass was in stronger company
when she won the onemile Westland Centennial Gold Cup last Saturday.
The switch back to six furlongs today should not dim the prospects of Mr A. Clouston’s Astraeus mare.
She won over six furlongs on the second day of the Westport spring meeting, two days after a victory over a mile and a quarter. In the absence of Norma’s Lass from the field for the first leg, the Caltex Gold Cup, the Riccarton light-weight, New Mint, holds a strong chance of improving on his first-day second. Norma’s Lass beat New Mint by three lengths on Saturday, but the Riccarton gelding’s run was meritorious. He was one of the slowest away.
Debbie Marie, a close second to Mister Bud, and Bold Invader, a fair third, will come in for solid backing on form. Jester Jinks could be one of the improvers. Today’s on-course double will be on the Renton Hack Handicap and the Evans Creek Trial Stakes. The track will be heavy. Fields:— 12.30 p.m.— RENTON HACK HANDICAP, $400: 6f._Pickawyn (2) 8-10.
