Tabak’s Grand Finale

T. J. Tabak will make an attempt on his own Australasian one-hour cycling record at English Park on December 7. It will be his final appearance in New Zealand before he leaves for Europe on December 15. Tabak's present record, set at English Park on February 23. 1966, is 26 miles 1167 yaq-is, and in a training ride

on Monday evening, he broke this mark by 181 yards. This was a very promising performance as it was established in blustery winds and was regarded mainly as a training ride. Between his sixty-fourth and seventy-sec-ond laps, Tabak was at his slowest, averaging about 35 sec a lap, but when the wind dropped, he quickened to 32 sec and 33sec laps. Tabak’s attempt will be sponsored by the I.G.A. organisation, and there will be a supporting programme of A

grade riders. If the weather is unsuitable, he will make the attempt the following Monday, December 11. New Zealand’s top tour rider and time trialist, Tabak has a target of about 27 miles but also in the back of his mind is the Commonwealth record held by G. Webb and set in September, 1966. Webb’s record of 27 miles 414 yards would be equivalent to about 108 laps of English Park, and Tabak could claim this as his own before he departs for overseas.
