Pearson On De Gaulle

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) LONDON, Nov. 28. The Prime Minister of Canada, Mr Lester Pearson, yesterday attacked the policies of President De Gaulle with frankness. He used words like “shortsighted,” “wrong” and “discredited.” Mr Pearson was speaking at a luncheon at the Mansion House after receiving the Freedom of the City of London. He said French policy was now threatening to disrupt and undermine the Western economic structure. He criticised President De Gaulle for his resistance to Britain’s membership of the Common Market and said France was having the same disruptive effect on the free world that Peking was having on the Communist world. “I see Britain in the role of a link between Europe and America,” Mr Pearson said. “Feeling this way, I naturally think it is shortsighted and wrong for any European country to oppose or put unnecessary obstacles in the way of Britain playing a full and constructive part.”
