7-MURDER CHARGE
Alleged Mafia Gang On Trial (N.Z. P.A. -Reuter—Copyright) TRAPANI (Sicily), Nov. 28. An alleged Mafia boss and 37 others went on trial in Trapani yesterday charged with seven murders, one attempted murder, kidnappings, and numerous other crimes. Mariano Licari, aged 70, and his gang are alleged to have terrorised the inhabitants of nearby Marsala in a bloody, drawn-out Mafia struggle for power that lasted from the end of the Second World War until 1963. The trial comes after years of police investigations hampered by the unwillingness of families of the victims to give evidence or press charges. Only one victim, a man injured in an ambush in 1962, has come forward to give evidence at the trial, which is expected to last at least a month.
