Century Of Records By Tui Shipston?

SPECTATORS who have ° come to expect a record from Tui Shipston every time she swims have had no grounds for disappointment so far this summer. Her four appearances have produced two New Zealand and two Canterbury records, with a further two national marks equalled. Her name has now apA peared in the Canterbury and New Zealand record book 75 times, and although her efforts are now confined to the senior section, the century mark seems well within her capabilities. Her first serious swim this season coincided with her last day as a junior.

Competing in the Olympic trials in the Wharenui poo! she set a new national mark for girls’ 440 yd freestyle. At the Canterbury centre’s first time trial session she broke the Canterbury senior 220 yd backstroke record; the second session yielded a New Zealand and Canterbury record for 220 yd medley. In the season’s first carnival at Sockbum Park last Saturday, she equalled the national short course marks from 440 yd and 400 metres freestyle. Another record of sorts was created when Miss Shipston swam a one mile butterfly in the Centennial learners' pool during a training session. Her time of about 28min compared favourably with the best times recorded for the distance in Britain, where certificates are awarded to swimmers who achieve the unusual feat Miss Shipston ha* achieved a remarkable record in Canterbury swimming; her list of successes are astounding for a swimmer competing in a major centre. There are 21 records available to senior and junior girl swimmers in Canterbury and Miss Shipston holds 16 of them, one of them jointly with Miss J. Nielson. On the national scene, she holds seven senior and six junior marks, as well as a share in one relay and two freestyle records. The medley continue* to be her prime target but her efforts to improve her times in the individual strokes will give her a wider field of opportunity for recordbreaking.
