WANTING NELSON

(N.Z. Press Association) NELSON, Nov. 17. Nelson wants to buy Dublin’s damaged monument to Lord Nelson. The suggestion came from a resident, who told the Nelson City Council that Nelson’s monument had been in storage since I.R.A. members damaged it some time ago. The suggestion was accepted last night by the Nelson City Council. The Mayor (Mr D. Strawbridge) said In an interview last night: “This is just a preliminary inquiry. We are not offering any stated sum for the monument. Dublin may want to give it away.” He said that the inquiry would be addressed to the Dublin City Corporation. Asked if he knew how much the monument weighed, Mr Strawbridge said: “I have no idea. But there could be few places in the world better for such a monument to be.” He said that the Nelson City Council would be glad to get the monument and would meet the cost of removal and freight to New Zealand.
