CHEQUE CHARGE

Payments To Govt (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 16. People making regular payments by cheque to most Government departments are being asked to add 3c to cover the banks’ clearance fee. Asked whether it was general Government policy to insist on collecting the clearance fee, the Secretary of the Treasury (Mr N. R. Davis) said that in the Public Accounts section the Treasury did not insist on departments collecting the fee individually. “Cheques from people who are making irregular payments, such as to meet income tax, will probably find that their cheques will be accepted all right,” he said.

“But where regular payments are being made to Government departments, such as the Public Trust Office or Insurance Offices, it must be appreciated that there is a clearance fee and that this will have to be raid.”
