CONDITION OF AMBULANCE

Concern Expressed At Kaikoura Concerned at the condition of its ambulance, purchased only two years ago, the Kaikoura Sub-centre of the St John Ambulance Association will write to the supplier about the state of the doors and paintwork.

This action was decided at the annual meeting of the sub-centre after the chairman (Mr H. J. Hayward) reported that although the vehicle was excellent mechanically, the sub-centre was dissatisfied with the body work. Both the cab doors and rear doors were badly fitting, and the paintwork was cracking badly, he .said. These points had been indicated to the suppliers, but so far nothing had been done. Meeting Advanced This year’s annual meeting was brought forward three months, at the request of divisional headquarters, to coincide with others in the Canterbury and West Coast area. During the nine months since the last annual meeting, the ambulance has already surpassed last year’s record mileage of 5287 miles by about 300 miles, the total being 5501 miles. It was reported that an ambu-suctlon unit had been purchased for use with the ambulance. A demonstration of this equipment would be given by Dr A. L. Johnston in the near future.

The sub-centre decided to approach the Kaikoura Trotting Club about siting the ambulance in a- more accessible place on the course during race day. Trouble has been experienced in pushing through the crowd to reach accidents.

A letter will, be written to the Kaikoura County Council applying for the lease of the old fire station, shortly to be vacated by the fire brigade. The sub-centre is in urgent need of suitable premises for the ambulance and brigade headquarters. Officers The election of officers resulted:— Patrons, Mr‘T. P. Shand, M.P., Mrs A. E. Boyd; chairman, Mr H. J. Haywood; secretary, Mrs E. H. Machen; divisional committee, Mesdames T. Plane, A. Wilson, C. A. W. Scott, Messrs K. E. Pitman, A. W. Wilson, L. P. Blunt, J. H. Comer. E. H. To Visit N.Z.—An Italian trade and economic . mission will visit New Zealand later this month to sound out possible markets for Italian products.—‘Sydney, November 16.
