FURTHER DRILLING

Oil Search In Southland (N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL, Nov. 17. Further oil drilling is to be undertaken by the New Zealand Petroleum Company in Western Southland, probably in the Waiau area. Although neither the sped tie rate nor the likely time of the start of operations have been announced, a definite decision to proceed with drilling has been made by the company. This has been confirmed by a director of the company, Mr J. Roysmith, of Christchurch. In recent years the company has drilled three holes west of Winton. One of them was abandoned after being blocked by equipment and the other two proved dry, although a “limited strata of oil-bearing sands” was found The deepest drill was to about 5000 feet.

Mr Roysmith says that from a geological point of view, the company considers further expenditure is warranted. Arrangements are being made for the assembly of drilling rig, piping and test equipment
