More Money Sought To Pay Unemployed
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 7. Parliament will be asked this session for another $16,397,300 by the Government by way of Supplementary Estimates. Nearly s2m is required because of the unemployment.
The Supplementary Estimates were introduced in Parliament tonight by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon). Last year the Supplementary Estimates required totalled $7,740,000.
This year sl6m will be added to the $1,529,915,716 asked for in the main Estimates. In the Labour Department
Vote the Government requires an extra $1,300,000 for promoting work for the unemployed. The main estimates provided for $113,800. In addition, the Social Security Department wants another $600,000 to go with the
slm approved earlier for benefits paid to the unemployed. The Air Force has asked for an extra slm to meet a down payment on the new Hercules aircraft. An extra $400,000, plus $lOO,OOO for land, has been requested by the Housing Constructio:' Division to provide for an increase in the letting of building contracts for State rental homes. The cost of the recent referendum on hotel hours and the life of Parliament, $320,000, is also included. State coal mines have been operating at an increasing loss and another $600,000 is provided for this on top of the sl.4m granted earlier. An additional $2.8 is wanted as a further milk subsidy as an end-of-season payment to producers and for increased milk treatment and vending charges. The original vote was sl2m. Most of the rest of the money is required for increased Public Service salaries. The Estimates will be discussed by the Public Expenditure Committee.
