FOUR AUSTRALIAN JUDGES IN SHEEP SECTION
Canterbury is well recognised as the' leading sheep show in New Zealand, and it is not surprising that the agricultural and pastoral association has invited several overseas judges to officiate.
Four Australians will judge in this year’s show. They are Mr H. W. Yelland (Romneys), Mr V. W. Seeker (Corriedale A classes), Mr H. C. Dent (Ryelands), and Mr W. J. Martin (Dorset Horn and Polled Dorsets).
Mr Yelland, of Newlyn, Victoria, is the leading Romney breeder in Australia and has accepted an invitation to judge at the Manawatu and Kelso shows as well as Christchurch. His Glentrover Romney stud was founded by his ifather in 1904 with sheep purchased from New Zealand. The stud has won numerous awards at the principal shows in Australia, and has been the most suc- ■ cessful exhibitor in the Romney section at the Melbourne Royal Show on fifteen occasions during the last 18 years. Mr Yelland has judged at every Royal Show in Australia and he has also judged in Kenya. For judging at Christchurch, Mr Yelland has requested that a show ring should be provided, with the sheep being held by assistants in the same way that cattle are judged. This will give the public, and the exhibitors in particular, every opportunity to see him at work. In addition, Mr Yelland will follow the Australian practice of addressing the public on the reasons for his placings. Mr Dent, who will judge the Ryelands, was born in Herefordshire, home of the Ryeland sheep and Hereford cattle. He is now the stock department manager of a large stock and station agency. After judging at the show, he will demonstrate the points of the Ryeland for the benefit of both exhibitors and the public. The Ryeland is quite a prominent breed for producing fat lambs in Australia. It has found a particular place in the irrigation areas.
