MAGISTRATE'S COURT Thief Apprehended By Off-duty Policeman

An off-duty constable in j Hereford Street on Monday saw the accused with a cash box under his coat, said De-tective-Sergeant T. J. C. Joy when Edward Arthur Halligan appeared before Mr E. A. Lee, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. Halligan, aged 47, a worki man, pleaded guilty to stealing a cash box and contents to a value of 54.30 from G. S. Salter, a solicitor. Detective-Sergeant Joy said Halligan entered the office of the complainant about 3.30 p.m. on November 6 and took the cash box from an unlocked strongroom. He put the box under his coat, and left, but was seen by an off-duty constable. Halligan made off, but was apprehended. The cash box and contents were recovered intact, said Detective-Sergeant Stevenson. “I was just short of money —I did it on the spur of the moment,” said Halligan. The Magistrate said Halligan had “an awful record” of theft and other offences. Halligan was imprisoned for two months. BURGLARY Two youths who broke into a house at 74 Inwoods Road on October 21 and took property valued at $135 when the occupier was absent, returned the next day with three others and damaged wallpaper. Murray Kenneth Wilson, aged 18, an apprentice bookbinder (Mr A. K. Archer) and Roland Jack Moore, aged 17, a workman (Mr J. F. Burn), ■ pleaded guilty to the burgj lary of the house, and were remanded for probation reports and sentence on November 20. Bail was allowed. Detective-Sergeant Joy said the defendants were interviewed on November 6 and immediately admitted the offence. They said they had been to a nearby party on the night of Saturday, October 21, and because they knew the occupier of 74 Inwoods Road was away, went to the house and entered through a window. Two armchairs and a heater were taken. After returning the next day with the other youths, and causing damage they i brought back the furniture. One of the other youths had taken a toaster and Wilson took a pair of cuff-links, which he later returned. Feeling sorry for what they had done, the defendants got in touch with the complainant j indirectly about the incident. 1 Restitution was asked, but I the amount was not yet i known, said DetectiveSergeant Joy. i ATTEMPTED THEFT Mario Radeka, aged 28, a carpenter, was fined $3O and ordered to make restitution of 1112.70 when he was convicted ; of attempting to steal 10ft of copper piping on September 9. Radeka pleaded guilty. The complainant had disturbed the accused on his property at 95 Fitzgerald Avenue about 10 a.m., said Detective Sergeant Joy. Radeka had bent the tubing to fit it into his car, but on , realising he had been seen, ran ‘ off and drove away. The complainant had hit a car belong- ' ing to a friend of O’Connor while backing out of the drive, ► and had hit the fence of the house, and O’Connor had been ' knocked over after he refused i to pay more, said Mr Smith. Detective Sergeant Joy said the complainant had spent two days in hospital as a result of being beaten and kicked by O’Connor. O'Connor was fined $4O. UNLAWFUL INTERCOURSE Barry Douglas Timlin, aged 21, a woolstore labourer, pleaded guilty to having sexual intercourse with a girl then aged 15 years 11 months, on November 4, and was remanded on bail until November 20 for a probation report and sentence. Detective Sergeant Joy said the girl had run away from home on October 23 and was found in a flat where she had been living with the defendant. INDECENT LANGUAGE A man who used indecent language outside the Christchurch Public Hospital when a police patrol car was waiting at the traffic lights in Riccarton Road on November 6, was fined $lO. Richard Norman Jeffreys, aged 51, a woolstore labourer, pleaded guilty to using indecent language in a public place. Jeffreys had been drinking but was not drunk, said Detective Sergeant Joy. FINED $2O If he were to take Into account the defendant’s performance in the witness-box, he would prefer the evidence of another witness, but this was not necessary, said the Magistrate when Jack Carroll Hunter, aged 59, a taxi driver, pleaded not guilty to carelessly using a car in Bealey Avenue on August 26. In convicting Hunter, the Magistrate said he had not acted with proper care. The charge arose out of a collision on the corner of Bealey Avenue and Victoria Street. Hunter was fined $2O. STOLE FURNISHINGS Michele Robin Burford, aged 18, a nurse aid, was fined $l5 when she pleaded guilty to stealing furnishings valued at $13.50, the property of Lenore Oakley, on October 7. Detective-Sergeant Joy said Burford freely admitted having stolen the property from a Salisbury Street flat. The return of the property was ordered. FOUR CHARGES , W’hen he attended a motor accident at Hei Hei Road at 9.15 p.m. on July 12. he found the driver involved, John Robert Godley Allpress, had no driver's licence, said Constable A. W. Berry. Allpress, who did not appear in court, was convicted of carelessly using a car, of having no driver's licence, of having no warrant of fitness, and of

using an unlicensed motor I vehicle. He was fined a total of $57 and was disqualified for a total of six months. DISMISSED A charge of serving a minor in a hotel bar at Lincoln on September 16 against William James Kortegast, aged 43, a barman, was dismissed. Kortegast was represented by Mr G. T. Mahon.
