Zoo Leopard Kills Mate
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Nov. 7. Patsy, the Wellington Zoo’s only female leopard, was strangled to death by her mate as she started to give birth to three cubs this morning. Zoo employees used a high power water hose to try separate the leopards and finally resorted to clubs and poles to beat off the male, Peter, but by the time it had been driven off—lo minutes after the attack started— Patsy was dead. An immediate caesarian section was performed on Patsy, but attempts to save the cubs, by mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and manual respiration, were unsuccessful. The attack took place just before workmen were to have finished installing a set of gates to keep the animals apart during the birth of the cubs.
